The Village Folk Club Christmas Party

Christmas is coming and that means it’s time for the Village Folk Club to get out its Santa hat!

We are really pleased to welcome the wonderful Kirsty Bromley to join us for the evening. Anyone who’s seen Kirsty singing in folk clubs or festivals around the country will already know what a lovely singer she is. Not only do we have the pleasure of Kirsty’s company, but the amazing Sisters in Arms Rapper team will be entertaining us with some very dangerous looking rapper dances. Don’t try it at home... unless you’re a rapper dancer.

As well as this, there’ll be our first ever raffle, mince pies, and of course carols galore!

The Village Folk Club with Haddo.

Haddo are husband and wife duo Will and Nicky Pound, joining forces to create a new and unique sound. Combining rich and exotic melodeon harmonies with the dark tone of the viola, they take well known tunes and twist them 180 degrees. From morris to bluegrass, traditional tunes to their own compositions, Haddo are guaranteed to raise the roof.

Having studied violin from an early age, Nicky Pound graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a masters in Baroque Viola in 2009. During this time, she had the privilege to work with the late great Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Colin Davies and Sir Elton John.

Will Pound is one of the world's top harmonica players and has taken the instrument to new places and new music, and has a style that is completely his own.
As well as his pyrotechnics on the harmonica, Will is now making a name for himself as a virtuoso melodeon player. While Haddo is his debut outing in a concert setting on this instrument, his dulcet tones have previously been heard in the recording studio with ceilidh band Steamchicken. He also guested on the recent release, Purpose and Grace, from the guitar genius Martin Simpson.  More recently, he received a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nomination for Best Musician.

The lovely and wonderful Pete Morton will join us for an evening of wonderful singing and we'll get a taste of his frapping in which he takes a traditional chorus and then raps the verses. A sight and sound to behold!

We are back after a long, manic and very wet summer. It's been great and now we return to our monthly dose of fun, The Village Folk Club.
This month we have Over the Yardarm a trio from up further north who play wonderful driving tunes on variations of melodean, guitars,  recorders and if we remember rightly, last time there was even a double bass!

The Piper's Tale with Ruthie Boycott-Garnett

When we started our club we said we would embrace all elements of the folk traditions. We have had plenty of wonderful songs and music and a bit of dancing (though not enough) and here we start our journey into Storytelling.

Ruthie is a well-known and highly regarded storyteller. She will bring you The Piper's Tale and whisk you off to the Isle of Skye and a long journey to Canada. The story contains some songs you might know and we will finally get to hear her play the amazing hurdy gurdy!

We have support from David Hirst a local singer songwriter. You can see a video of him here

There will still be floor spots too so do get in touch if you'd like to perform.
