The Village Folk Club Christmas Party

Tuesday 18th Dec
Taurus Bar, Canal St, Manchester
8.00pm start

Christmas is coming and that means it’s time for the Village Folk Club to get out its Santa hat!

We are really pleased to welcome the wonderful Kirsty Bromley to join us for the evening. Anyone who’s seen Kirsty singing in folk clubs or festivals around the country will already know what a lovely singer she is. If you’ve never seen Kirsty before, have a look at this clip of her performing at Shepley Spring Festival earlier this year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2Mj960CIus
Not only do we have the pleasure of Kirsty’s company, but the amazing Sisters in Arms Rapper team will be entertaining us with some very dangerous looking rapper dances. Don’t try it at home... unless you’re a rapper dancer.
As well as this, there’ll be our first ever raffle, mince pies, and of course carols galore!
All this for only £4 admission!! You can’t afford to miss it...

The Village Folk Club with Haddo.

Tuesday 20th Nov 2013, 7.30pm doors 8pm start. £8.00/ £6.50.
Taurus Bar, Canal St, Manchester

Haddo are husband and wife duo Will and Nicky Pound, joining forces to create a new and unique sound. Combining rich and exotic melodeon harmonies with the dark tone of the viola, they take well known tunes and twist them 180 degrees. From morris to bluegrass, traditional tunes to their own compositions, Haddo are guaranteed to raise the roof.
Picture
Having studied violin from an early age, Nicky Pound graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a masters in Baroque Viola in 2009. During this time, she had the privilege to work with the late great Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Colin Davies and Sir Elton John.
Will Pound is one of the world's top harmonica players and has taken the instrument to new places and new music, and has a style that is completely his own.
As well as his pyrotechnics on the harmonica, Will is now making a name for himself as a virtuoso melodeon player. While Haddo is his debut outing in a concert setting on this instrument, his dulcet tones have previously been heard in the recording studio with ceilidh band Steamchicken. He also guested on the recent release, Purpose and Grace, from the guitar genius Martin Simpson.  More recently, he received a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nomination for Best Musician.

The Village Folk Club with Kirsty McGee

Tuesday 21st February 2012
7.30pm doors for 8pm start
Taurus Bar, 1 Canal St, Manchester (5 mins walk form Piccadilly train station)
£4 concessions and floorspots, £6 all the rest

Twice nominated for BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Kirsty McGee has been touring to critical acclaim since her debut in 2002. Her style continues to defy categorisation, earning her the tag of 'cult' singer-songwriter in the UK.

Combining styles as diverse as folk, jazz, chanson and Americana, her work is held together by her distinctive lyrical style and astonishing voice, equally comfortable in dark, intimate ballads and up-tempo carny-shuffle numbers. Her shows explore a cross-section of these energies through an extensive range of subject matters and instruments. Reviews for her most recent album 'No.5' (recorded live in one take with her full band The Hobopop Collective) have been unanimous in their praise for her skilled handling of words and impeccable taste in arrangements.

With a history of politics, homelessness and wanderlust, Kirsty McGee suffuses her work with a musical vagrancy that enriches her songs and styles, from "hipkat trilby swing" (acoustic magazine) to "exquisite and skeletal" (Q Magazine).

Quotes:
'Bewitching' **** - Q
'A fascinating talent' - Clash
'Rich, versatile and immaculately controlled' - Americana-UK
